PROJECT SCOPE:
After having gutted this loft office in the historic Studioplex building in Old Fourth Ward (Atlanta) we were able to start with a blank canvas. The space needed to be completely flexible without being crowded. The vision for the final design was a space that could be used for offices (up to 6+ people), special events (art/food), or as a residential live-work space.
We were constrained by a few things – some of them imposed by the original build out, plumbing, main electrical location and some of them self-imposed to keep as much of the original character of the space as possible. The building has the oldest poured concrete floors in Georgia and the level of patina and original imperfections were something we encompassed in the final design.
We blended high end fixtures and custom built desks with budget conscious but good looking items like Ikea stainless cabinetry and reclaimed doors, to keep the costs down and the final product worthy of the original vision.
Other interesting details include:
- 100 year old reclaimed brick faces for the bathroom and kitchen areas
- To keep as much of the space open as possible, if desired, all doors are either hide-away pocket or sliding barn doors
- Special attention was paid to lighting as light only enters the space from one direction. Revised lighting can easily accommodate work/live and temporarily installed environments.
- European style shower with exposed brick for folks that want to bike to work on the beltline
- Commercial spiral ductwork – beautiful and functional esthetic
- Live edge shelving uppers in kitchen area
- Hand-blown glass lighting fixtures by Janke Glass
- Custom counter and artwork by AB Lovell
- Custom repositionable desks by Evan Daeschler – G7 Creative
